The Convertible Crib: How One Piece of Baby Furniture Can Save You Time, Money, and Space
For new parents who are tight on either money or space, a convertible crib might just be the perfect solution. You know how it goes: You learn you're pregnant and immediately start planning for your nursery set, decorating the nursery, and buying all of those cute clothes. Eight-and-a-half months later, you're looking at your giant belly and wondering where all the time went.

There's not even a crib, let alone an entire nursery set, there are no decorations on the wall, and all of those cute clothes still need to be washed and given a home (which is tricky, considering we just determined you haven't purchased your baby furniture yet)! Time, money, and space are all at a premium right about now.One great option is to consider purchasing a “convertible crib.”

These handy pieces of baby furniture can be used throughout your child's life in a number of different ways. Many of the cheap nursery furniture brands carry these marvels of engineering, although you can find them at pretty much every price level. What makes convertible cribs such a great deal and a great newborn baby idea?

First of all, many of them serve as more than just a crib. The Simplicity convertible cribs, for example, have an attached changing table, complete with shelves and drawers. The shelves of the changing table are perfect for necessities like diapers, wipes, and creams. The drawers can be used for storage, or they can easily become your baby dresser. This works out really well for families that just don't have a lot of room for an entire nursery set. A six-foot-long space is enough for a crib, a changing table, and a baby dresser. This is an especially good option if the baby needs to share a room with older siblings.

Convertible cribs can also be used for a longer period of time, depending on the style you purchase. For example, some convertible cribs allow you to remove the side gate once the baby is a little older and replace it with included side rails. This easily turns your crib into a toddler bed. By removing the pad from the attached changing table, you now have both a toddler bed and a dresser/night stand that can be used by your little one. The rails can be removed from the toddler bed later on to create a daybed that can remain in your child's room.

There's one more evolution to the convertible crib, too. Once your child is older, the back side of the crib can be attached to a full-sized bed frame to create a headboard. What was once the changing table and baby dresser detaches to become a matching night stand. As we said, the original purchase doesn't have to be an expensive one, and you can continue using the convertible crib for years, which really adds to the savings.

Of course, money is just one thing you'll save by using a convertible crib.
You'll also save the hassle of buying a separate changing table now and purchasing a toddler bed later. Finally, the convertible crib concept allows you to save on space, since it is basically its own compact nursery set. If you're looking for a crib for your own child or seeking a unique gift for babies coming into someone else's life, a convertible crib might be the answser.
